Tatum’s 1 Year Birthday Photo Shoot

Introducing Tatum! This was her first visit to our photography studio to celebrate her 1 year birthday. She was such a pleasure to work with, from her big blue eyes and curly red hair down to her cute little smile. Her older brother put on a goofy hat,made funny noises and danced around to get her to laugh. He worked wonders. She is definitely a camera hound and LOVES to have her portrait taken. We cannot wait to see her again.

Aubree is a very sweet photogentic little girl that just turned 1 year old in March.
She first came to us for our Halloween Special dressed as a cute little rabbit, we were so happy to see her again.

Fall Portraits with Trey and Drew Neighbors

This is the second year I have had the pleasure of working with Robin Neighbors on some family fall/holiday portraits. This year she decided she wanted to do portraits of just the kids in an outdoor setting. After many days of rain I was happy on the day of our shoot to find we had a beautiful sunny day. Trey and Drew and Mom, Robin, arrived at the studio in the afternoon. One of the first statements out of Robin’s mouth was that Trey had said the night before that he was so excited to be doing pictures with Jamye again. Well, of course, for a young boy to say he was looking forward to doing portraits made me feel like I must be doing something right!After a little prep we followed the path behind the studio to a fallen tree that I use quite often for outdoors portraits. I also decide I would take them to another area close by the studio for another series of shots that turned out to be my favorites. Here are a few of them.

I recently had the pleasure of having Tim, Tiffany and Cade in my studio for their first official family portrait. What a cute family!! Cade made his arrival into this world earlier this year. Shortly before his birth I did a maternity photo session for Tiffany and Tim in their home. I should have known from the wonderful images we got from that session that their first family portraits would be just as adorable. Could this family get any cuter?

Halloween 2009

If you have kiddos get them suited up in their costumes and bring them to the studio on Oct. 30th anytime between noon and 5pm for a mini photo shoot.

Victoria Turns One!

Rainy and her one year old daughter Victoria arrived at the photography studio in the early afternoon and we set right to work deciding on clothing and backdrops. I had told Rainy to bring a variety of clothing and a few props that she might like to use during the portrait session to showcase Victoria’s first birthday.I have been photographing adults and young adults for many years but photographing small children alone on a regular basis is something that is fairly new to me.

In the last year I have learned that no matter what I might have in mind that the person really determining the flow of the shoot is the child. Yes, I have learned a few tricks to get the shot and I am still learning more but I have also learned nothing is better than good old fashioned patience. For this reason I schedule plenty of time for sessions with little ones.Sometimes we may get a variety of good shots very quickly and others times we need may to be patient and wait.

Sometimes we have a child who can handle a variety of clothing changes and stays good natured through the session. In any situation I want to make sure we have enough time and don’t feel rushed.

Victoria was just one of those children that stayed in a fairly good mood despite the fact that we changed her clothes and the set several times.

One of the props that Rainy brought was a really cool hat box. As soon as I saw it I knew I had to use in along with one of the new damask backdrops I purchased last week. I love the look we got with this shot. I am betting Rainy will too.

Rainy, it was a pleasure to meet you and Victoria yesterday ! I am now looking forward to photographing your entire family!

Portrait Story of a Fellow Photographer’s Family

It is always interesting to shoot an assignment for a fellow professional photographer. I have done this a few times over my 13 year photography career. I recently did such an assignment for a good friend and pro photographer. She wanted family portraits and wanted an outdoor location. We are both very familiar with the Dallas Arboretum and decided this would work perfectly for what she wanted.Shelli thought she had everything planned out and was well prepared for her session. She has now told me she has a new outlook for her own client’s trials and tribulations in respect to preparing for a portrait session. Apparently there were a few mishaps prior to their arrival but I would have never known had she not told me. They all arrived in a fairly calm and good natured state.

Photography is such a subjective medium with endless ways something can be done so of course working for another photographer makes you wonder if they would shoot things differently than yourself. When we were nearing the end of the session Shelli asked if I would focus on her girls cute, little, dirty, shoeless feet as they played in the grass. These images may just be my favorite from the day but had she not mentioned it I would have not thought to shoot this part of the session that way. With her inspiration of a shallow depth of field and focus on their little feet I decided to take it one step further. I rummaged around in my camera bag and pulled out my lensbaby. It’s a specialty lens that allows for selective focus. It’s a bit of a challenge to use especially when your subject doesn’t stay still for long but when you can get that sweet spot in just the right part of your frame it helps create a really special and unique image. Just like the very last one in this post.
